ABOUT THE PROJECT

In the name of progress, are we as a society losing means of socialisation?

This project explores the idea of shared public toilets, something that existed in society during the Roman Civilisation. The poster design incorporates illustrations to imagine how society has evolved in terms of privacy and taboo, at a glance.

Is privacy and solitude leading to a lack of human connection?

The ancient Roman Empire had public bathrooms installed, called foricae. Civilisation at that time was not embarrassed about fulfilling their bodily needs. The need to excrete was seen as an opportunity to socialise in the public bathrooms/communal baths. Increase in privacy concern led to more private latrines, which led to the slow change in the thinking of society. The act of defecation became a social stigma and taboo, one that people prefer not to mention out loud.

The project questions societal taboos against the use of latrines. What if social events were conducted like before?
