This is my first time exploring type design in such detail. We had a timeframe of 2 weeks to design a typeface from scratch in devanagari script. The process began with lettering explorations (skeleton and flesh) for a chosen letter. The finalised design was then taken forward and 12 characters along with 4 matras were designed and digitised.

Skeleton Explorations

These explorations were done over 3 rounds. Each round was 10 mins each. Post each round, the skeletons were placed and similar looking designs were grouped together. Everything was analysed to understand what styles have been tried, what hasn't and what can be done. This was done as part of a group so I had the opportunity to take a look at other designs for inspiration.

Flesh Explorations

A variety of tools were used to explore flesh from bamboo devanagari tools to different types of markers. There is a lot of play between thicknesses, proportions and size of strokes. These variations can alter the skeletons look completely leading to very interesting designs.

Using Glyphs 3 to digitise the typeface

There were many drafts and iterations done to each letter post digitising. This is to ensure proper spacing and structure with every possible combination of letters placed beside each other. It also depends on words and its length. There are some minor and some major changes between drafts. Some tests and sheets are shown below.
